UG Dominates GUSA Cross Country

The 17th edition of the Inter-University GUSA(Ghana Universities Sports Association) Cross Country came off on the 10th November 2012 at the University of Ghana Athletics Oval. The various public universities; KNUST (male and female), UPS (male and female), UEW (male and female), UCC (male and female) and UMAT (male) were present except UDS (University of Development Studies, Tamale). The  University of Professional Studies formally known as IPS was also present. It was a 12km race for the men and 8km for the ladies to challenge each other for the ultimate.
The annual Cross Country event has always been a platform for the various universities to showcase their strenghts in terms of long distance races as it is not part of the biannual GUSA Games.
This year the University of Ghana retain their male title for the 4th consecutive time as the team made a good finish by holding firm to all the first three positions by Akuka Williams, Godwin Oduro Friko and Delali jaspah. They were inspired by their ladies who completely dominated their female race as a result of an intensive training. Chaity Osei, Faustina Gymah, Ariel Mcguire among others were the spearheads of the ladies team.
The cross country team trained by Coach Timothy Mensah and Viviana Efua Dansowaa displayed a lot of quality, determination, strength and courage during the race and supported each other so as to finish the race in pairs. Cross country running is based on individual performance but also counts on team performance as the positions are very important to determine the winning team.
