JOSEPH JAMENA MENSAH WINS UG CHESS LEAGUE!!!!!!!

Joseph Jamena Mensah, a 2nd year computer science student upset the odds and won the inaugural UGchess league. Joseph needed a mini miracle to win, First he had to beat Fobah, and hope that Richard Gabah beat Daniel Osom.... as Daniel Osom was up a point leading to the last round of fixtures... and that was exactly what happened.

Graced by the presence of the past school captain, Phillip Ameku, all players wanted to impress. The atmosphere was charged with anticipation fear, hope and expectation. For Daniel Osom, a victory would mean the trophy, and for Gabah,
well, playing for pride and the spirit of fair play

The game between Jamena vs Fobah and Richard gabah vs daniel oSOM Were played simultaneously to a packed audience. In Jamena vs fOBAH, jAMENA easily defeated his opponent.

The game between Osom and Gabah was quite an unusual one. A comedy of errors really. Daniel Osom was up when R. gabah blundered his knight quite early on in the game..so strange was the blunder that most observers watching thought the game might have been fixed. But later events would proved otherwise. So, with that blunder, Osom was in cruise control and all he needed to do was to remain
calm, not make any wild moves and exchange the vital pieces. He failed to do all three. He allowed his bishop to get pinned by Gabah's Rook and this allowed GABAH TO get back into the game. ..and once Gabah, the more calm one, (probably due to the fact that he had nothing to lose), came back into the game,he never looked like he was going to lose.

With that win, Richard Gabah effectively ended Daniel Osom's dream of lifting the cup. Elation, joy and disbelief was written all over Joseph's face as it finally dawned on him that he was the League champion, and with that..had won the King's cup. In sharp contrast, Osom looked disappointed, his failure to clear the hurdle costing him the cup.
