Dr. Emmanuel Owusu-Ansah was born in Kumasi on the 3rd February 1950. He attained his academic and professional qualifications in Sport Science, Sports Coaching and Sports Management in Brazil, Germany, Italy, Poland and Switzerland. Between 1984-2004 he held the positions of National Chief Athletic Coach, Chief Sports Development Officer, Acting Chief Executive of the National Sports Council and Director of Sports at the Ministry of Youth and Sports. He initiated the opening of the Winneba Sports College and became the first Head of the now C.K. Gyamfi Sports College in Winneba.
Currently the head of the Sports Directorate at the University of Ghana, he holds a Master of Science and Doctorate Degree in Physical education and Sports and an Executive Masters in Sports Management Organisation. He has published two books on Sports and fitness related matters.
In his interview with Beatrice Dumaah Owusu, he underlined the importance of the human resource at the Sports Directorate and the dynamism with which they work. But he quickly went ahead to express the need for more facilities to be put in place so as to ease the work load at the Office.
The role of the Sports Directorate, he explained, is to enhance student abilities outside the lecture halls, teach sports values, life skills, honesty competition and management through sports. He also acknowledged
the immense help provided by the Vice Chancellor, the Pro Vice Chancellor, the Registrar, the Directors, the Head of Departments, the Labourers to the Sports Directorate in achieving its purpose. With the GUSA (Ghana Universities Sports Association Games scheduled for early January 2012, Dr. Emmanuel Owusu-Ansah is sure that Legon has a point to prove due to the level of sporting activities Legon has seen during the first semester. As it stands, University of Ghana is the only public institution that has both Basket Ball and Soccer running on a league system. With this innovation, the Dr. Emmanuel Owusu-Ansah believes that the fitness of the players will be an advantage compared to their colleagues in the other universities.
He also talked about the encouragement given to games that have not been included in the GUSA Games and how they are being organised at the University (Rugby, Baseball, Cricket and Taekwondo). He has also promised to start Kick-boxing very soon at the University of Ghana.
