The league system which he introduced two years ago
to sharpen the skills of sports men and women has immensely contributed to the
development of sports in the university, hence their ability to excel in
external competitions, like the recently held mini Ghana University Sports
Association games which took place in Tamale where the male soccer team won
gold with their ladies picking the silver medal.
Speaking at the end of year sports awards and dinner
held at the University of Ghana swimming pool grounds over the weekend, the
vice chancellor admitted putting measures in place to provide more funds to the
halls to motivate their sports men and women and also make the league more
attractive.
He admitted that there are challenges with the
league system which his outfit will seek to address. He also talked about his will to complete the main UG Sports Stadium and then bid for the hosting of the next FASU Games (Federation of Africa University Sports).
During the end of year dinner, the Director of Sports, Dr Emmanuel Owusu-Ansah also announced his departure from the Directorate and gave a detailed report of his tenure in office. He also charged the University authorities to establish a Department of Physical Education and Sports Studies just like in Cape Coast and Winneba.
During the Awards night, many deserving sportsmen and women were awarded in different categories.
