TEAM UG PLACE 3RD AT THE 5TH MINI GUSA GAMES


The 5th mini Ghana University Sports Association games came to an intriguing end over the weekend at the Tamale sports stadium.
The competition saw 7 public Universities; host University for Development Studies, University of Mines and Technology, University of Professional Studies, ACCRA, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Education, Winneba, University of Cape Coast and the University of Ghana, Legon compete for pride and honour in men and women’s football and athletics.
After a weeklong competition, the University of Cape Coast was Adjudged the overall winner of the competition with 15 gold, 4 silver and 4 bronze medals a total of 23 medals while the University of Education, Winneba placed 2nd with 9 gold, 5 silver and 4 bronze medals a total of 18 medals and the University of Ghana coming 3rd with 5 gold, 13 silver and 8 bronze medals a total of 26 medals.

In women’s football five schools participated namely; University of Education, Winneba, University of Ghana, Legon, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Cape Coast and the University of Professional Studies, Accra.
After an all play all league system, the University of Education, Winneba came 1st with 10 points.
The University of Ghana followed in 2nd place with 9 points after losing their first game of the competition to winners, University of Education.
KNUST placed 3rd with 7 points with UCC placing 4th with 4 points while UPSA finished at the bottom of the table with no points after losing all games.
In the men’s football competition,
The various seven participating teams were paired in two groups, A and B.
Group B was tagged the group of death consisting the University of Ghana, Legon, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Cape Coast and University of Professional Studies, Accra.
Group A was made up of host, University for Development Studies, University of Mines and Technology and GUSA champions University of Education, Winneba.
After a keenly contested group battle, group A runner’s up UMaT met group B winners UCC in the semi-finals while group B runner’s up UG locked horns with group A winners UEW in the other semi-final.
UCC went pass UMaT by 2 goals to 1 to progress to the finals while UG defeated UEW in a fiercely contested game by 3 goals to 1.
In the finals, UG stunned UCC with a 3-2 defeat to emerge as winners of the 5th mini GUSA soccer competition.
