VIKINGS END THE WINNING STREAK OF VANDALS IN UG SOCCER LEAGUE FINAL

SARBAH HALL TEAM WINNERS OF 2013/2014 UG SOCCER LEAGUE

These are the moments Mensah sarbah hall (Vikings) will always cherish and never forget. They gave everything and finally, when it was all done, they had the University of Ghana inter hall soccer league trophy in their possession after three years of knocking.

It came down to the gut-wrenching drama of a penalty shootout after they held the only unbeaten team of the league commonwealth hall (Vandals) to a goalless draw in a nerve racking finale.

 At one stage commonwealth hall was leading 3-1 in the shoot-outs and the Viking players stood in line, heads bowed, fearing the worst but Alhassan Abubakar’s effort was saved by the goalkeeper of the Vikings Thomas Amediku and at that point the vandals knew they were on the brink of walking past the trophy and not being allowed to touch it. Certainly so, Samuel Opkara ballooned his kick over the goal post to kill their dream of setting the invisible record of winning the league title without tasting a defeat.

 Daniel Nii Tackie converted the final kick to bring exultation to all Vikings both old and current students present at the main soccer field on the University of Ghana campus.

The vandals largely held the upper hand throughout the full 90 minutes yet were unable to capitalise. Coming into the game with a record of scoring 32 goals in 15 matches and conceding just 5 goals, they were tipped to produce more goals and probably win the title to complement their purple patch form of the season but it looks like they will still have to wait a year longer as the only traditional hall yet to lift the 3 years old UG league trophy after Akuafo, Legon and Sarbah Halls all now having a feel of it.

In the third place play off, former champions

Akuafo hall consoled themselves with a 2-0 victory over debutants from the Distance Education Unit.

After a bitter 2-1 defeat suffered at the hands of the Vikings, the farmers went into the game with their minds set on going for just a win which was not denied them by the startled distance team that defied all odds to reach the top 4 competition of the UG soccer league.
Sixteen teams begun the race from two groups A and B but just one team has been able to leap the hurdle very well to emerge champions of 2014. The remaining fifteen teams will have to go back to their drawing boards or consult the Vikings for lessons on the tale of UG league success.
