In 2011, a new gem and
talented chess player was hatched. He led the Western regional chess team to
win the Gold medal at the Unity Games. Mr. Joseph Jamena Mensah, prior to this feat, attended
the Ghana National College in the Central region in 2007 where little was known
about his chess prowess.
Mr. Joseph Jamena Mensah is a level 300 and Computer Science student of the University of Ghana (UG). As many thirsty universities sort after him, UG was fortunate to have him. As a sound academic student, he is able to marry and manage his academic and sports time well which so far is exemplary to many of his colleagues and team mates.
As a member of the
school team, he also leads as the vice president of the UG Chess Club. This position
does not intimidate or get into his head because of his devotion and love for
chess amongst Ghanaian students and desire to bring it to the lime-light. More
enviably was this when in November 2013 he took the 3rd position at
Reisse & Co Open Championship.
Making it to the National has always been the core challenge to
many athletes however; Mr. Mensah’s ardency, indomitable, workmanship and team
spiritedness won him the 3rd place in the December 2013 National
Championship thereby qualifying him for the National team.
Mr. Joseph Jamena
Mensah and his team mates are undergoing massive mind and physically training
sessions as preparations are underway for the August 2014 Olympiad championship
in Tromso, Norway. He is confident that his team will prove their talent and win
the overall trophy.
