The university of Ghana
rugby team (titans) last Saturday; the 4th of May emerged the first
runner-up in the Nurevas rugby 15’s after beating Idas rugby club by 22 tries
to 12. The league which started on the 13th of April saw the titans
thrashing Accra sharks 18 tries to nothing then following up with a loss to cosmos
buffaloes 26-7 before taking Idas down to emerge second on the table.
The team prior to this
match was lying third on the table having conceded more tries than their rivals
Idas rugby football club.
The game which was the
second match of the day was preceded by the national anthem and a haka (chant)
by the titans.
In the early minutes of the game, the titans
went down by a try but were quick to react from a Philip Asomani try.
Two tries from skipper
Marshall Nortey gave team UG a comfortable cushion into the first half.
After recess both teams
came with different attitudes, however the game ended with both teams scoring a
try each. Tries were scored by eighth man Sadat Salifu (titans) and forward
Mohammed (Idas).
After the game, the team
was presented with a certificate of participation, best club award and a cash
prize of five hundred Ghana cedis.
Elsewhere Cosmos
buffalos maintained an impressive performance after beating Accra Sharks 42-0
to emerge winners of the maiden Nurevas rugby 15’s league.
