The New Face of WAUG!!!

When I walked into the accreditation room with the printed copies of the University of Ghana  list of athletes I had the shock of my life when I saw the screening process participants were being taken through. The IT personnel at the WAUG Secretariat thoroughly checked students credibility through their university portal. Those who could not assess their portal went through a manual screening process which involved series of interrogation.
The interrogation process, which was being done by a WAUG Executive member, saw many suspected mercenaries disqualified. Some could neither write their names, explain their course of study nor just show their skills in the Shakespearean language.
Before the Tournament, it was well stated that only genuine students with solid proof will be accepted into the games and so far WAUG has been able to fish out most of the non-student participants.

The result of this exercise explains why this WAUG can be termed as different as the Nigerian teams can now be evenly compared to the universities from other countries such as Burkina Faso, Ghana, Senegal and Benin. In Handball for example only three teams registered for both the male and female categories. In Hockey, only three teams in the male category are present. The concentration is rather on Table tennis, Swimming(with 16 universities competing) and athletics (35 universities competing).

The new face of WAUG (West African University Games) is promising as students from West Africa finally get the chance to experience the rational behind the games being sports, competition, friendship, excellence and respect. Should WAUG maintain its stand on eradicating non-students participation, WAUG will then attain and maintain the top spot it deserves as the best way to gather all West African Universities into a unique fraternity.
Long live WAUG!!! Long live Team Legon!!! Go UG!!!
