The University of Ghana Handball Team played a friendly match on Wednesday 9th November 2011 with HOSTAC at the Kaneshie Sports Complex. With the GUSA (Ghana Universities Sports Association) games scheduled for January at KNUST (Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, in Kumasi), Coach Emmanuel T. Sabutey has started building his Handball team.
The ladies team, made up 18 players lost to HOSTAC ladies by 31-15. The ladies even though they played a reduced team (HOSTAC used only 7 players) were finding difficulties in finding their feet in the game. Bernice Yeboah, Hilda Evensmo, Mandy Ashong, Eugenia Oku and Irene Yeboah were faced with a strong challenge from HOSTAC.
With the guys, 18 in number(out of the 34 called for justification), Coach Sabutey gave more time play to the new level 100s and 200s. They performed well against an experienced HOSTAC team. New and young players like Emmanuel Tandoh, Richard Alebna, Salim Masud, Danny Okerchiri and Evans Adjahli solidly defended their line and took daring but yet stunning chances against the HOSTAC keepers to an extent were dropping of balls became the order of the day. Mohammed Haruna Hafiz, captain of the team was impressed with the young lads display and knows that there will be many challenges in camp for various positions.
Both the female and male keepers made heart stopping saves. Bismark Appiah (Black) and Edward Akorful performed wonders as they stopped HOSTAC with superb butterfly saves during one-on-one situations. The guys separated on a 24-22 scoreline.
With such performance, it is clear that all the UG handball players are keen to make it into the final selection for Kumasi games and thus have left Coach Sabutey with a dilemma of whom to choose over who. Their next friendly match is scheduled for Wednesday 16th November 2011 against the same HOSTAC on Legon Campus.
